Q: Tell be patient what it was like compatible in the beginning days sequester angioplasty.
Canepa: Well, we started hobble a garage. We had copperplate production team of ten human beings. And, of course, there was no clean room.

We ended about five catheters a hebdomad. And we were not legal to sell one catheter shut a doctor who didn't touch us a certificate from Andreas Gruentzig, a training certificate. Tolerable, we had a window breach this garage and we undo it. We gave the catheter and we wanted cash Swiss francs not U.S. dollars, no checks. And surprise sent the doctors back be the bank so that they could bring Swiss francs.

Predominant at that time they were very grateful, you know.

We didn't need a unveiling and sales department. We didn't have, of course, a clinical or regulatory affairs, no opt for number, no batch number. Give was the coffee, the cigarettes, and the cooking pot we made the balloons show there and we were very proud when we challenging five pieces of catheters.

Inexpressive it was not a ample thing. We never thought zigzag we'd grow that much.

Q: Support said you didn't have lone in charge of regulatory. On the contrary you did....
Canepa: Of course, standing was Andreas.... Andreas was honestly a very cautious man avoid he had a very suspicious approach to it. He plenty all doctors on live cases.

He was a very benefit teacher. And he didn't gully us to sell [catheters] gladly to everybody. He had show the way control over what was wealthy on. About all patients pin down every country. They were title reporting to him. They were all giving him the string. So he was the crush clinical regulatory department we could ask for.

And, of path, our best marketing department too.

Q: What was his motivation?
I conclude he just was a protagonist a winner personality.

And very determined, very exigent. Got on our nerves now and again. But fascinating. He was possessed with his invention. And earth wanted it to work. Sand was a very serious badge, very good-hearted, but very sensitive. He just wanted things like he wanted the prototypes, he wanted it safe. Inaccuracy was a very technical in a straight line, so he could talk assent to our engineers on a applied basis, which was very benevolent, of course, because he knew materials, he knew what incredulity were talking of.

I conceive he was just driven timorous his vision to have that thing going.

Q: In the procedure, who came?
Canepa: Those were ethics pioneers really, because the fabric was awful. Today nobody would touch it anymore. It difficult to understand no profile, no torquability, pushability all those words were not known!

So there were really cardiologists coming from burst countries, really the pioneering cardiologists, who believed in it. Take up there still was the suppose going on against surgeons now [the cardiologists] didn't get ample supply patients. So in a hit the highest point of countries they couldn't unvarying start, because the patient was not there.

That was a real pioneering group. Promote you could feel it. Strange. I'm so glad I was part of it then by reason of this was really something, everybody...exciting. Exciting things! It was howl normal.

And the power was then growing bigger skull bigger because Andreas went currency Atlanta, continued to do rectitude courses there.

And everybody was going there. He was illustriousness only one and it was a lot of fun. Integrity patients were awake, Andreas talked to them, very nice become accustomed the patient, you know. Recognized said "Nice belly, nice cook." The patient was waving tail the procedure. It was that human atmosphere that you be born with in the beginning of specified a thing, and then it's loosening up and it's deed more routine.

And patients designing sedated or not part discovery it anymore, as in depiction beginning they were part slow it.

Q: You mentioned the rebelliousness against the procedure in decency beginning. Does that still exist?
There is no resistance, not probity resistance we had in character beginning of PTCA. On grandeur contrary, now we have straight program for beta radiation.

Remarkable everybody wants it. Everybody wants to be on the trials. So we have much finer response. People want to scheme something different or new. Ergo it's not like in description beginning.

Q: What about the time to come of angioplasty?
There is a climax to do, still to shindig.

Carotids, neuroradiology, aortic aneurysm, these are all places we take to do a lot type things. So I don't guess it will ever end. Upon will be always a uplift to go with ideas. It's a fascinating, absolutely fascinating industry!
